Small Animal Pet Services

Facilities

Park Veterinary is based on two sites; the main surgery is Park Veterinary Centre 256 Cassiobury Drive, Watford, WD17 3PA and a smaller consulting facility, Park Veterinary Clinic at 9 Katherine Place, Leavesden, WD5 0BT.
Clients can choose to see a Vet at either of the sites and a full record of your pet’s treatment is available to us at either place so you can switch between the 2 surgeries at your convenience.
Should your pet require more extensive treatment than our Katherine Place surgery can offer, you will be referred to our main surgery where a wider range of facilities is available.

PARK VETERINARY CENTRE, Cassiobury

Reception and waiting area with shop

The open plan, air-conditioned reception area with our friendly and efficient reception staff welcome our clients to the Centre. Reception incorporates the waiting area, information board and shop.

Consulting rooms

Within our main premises we have three vet consulting rooms and one used by Carol McGuigan, our qualified behaviourist and Pet Health Counsellor. Dark-room eye examinations and ultrasonography are carried out in another room which is also equipped for standard consultations. Several of our vets have a special interest in exotic pets and one in ophthalmology.

Consultations are by appointment only but we have varying appointment times throughout the day to accommodate our clients. Please telephone to arrange a time convenient to you and your pet.

Operating Suite

Our operating suite consists of two fully equipped operating theatres, a large prep room which is also used for minor ops and dental procedures, and kennelling facilities. Adjoining the op suite is the dedicated x-ray facility. All of these facilities enable our team to assess, diagnose and treat your pets as efficiently and sympathetically as possible. We are very fortunate in having an excellent relationship with one of the best Referral Centres in the country where specialist investigations and treatment for difficult cases can be obtained.

Ward

Our hospital ward includes a separate cat ward and vivaria (for reptiles etc), and will keep your pets safe and comfortable while awaiting any treatment or recovering from surgery. A grassed area at the rear is available where canine patients can be exercised. The dedicated trained nursing staff will comfort and care for your pets while they are away from home and our team of night staff will continue this care overnight and provide an emergency service for new cases that need to be seen out of hours by the duty vet.

Laboratory

Adjacent to the consulting suite is in the in-house laboratory where a wide range of blood and other tests are carried out when results are needed urgently. For the majority of our lab tests we use commercial laboratories and obtain quick and accurate results costing our clients much less than if we did them in-house.

Senior Health Checks

The Park Veterinary Centre is delighted to announce that we will now be offering subsidised veterinary examinations for our senior pets when examined at a time other than their yearly vaccination (we suggest 6 months after their booster).

When dogs reach 8 years old and cats 10 years old they should be regarded as senior citizens. Although most dogs and cats live much longer than this, their bodies are getting to the stage where diseases of old age including arthritis, dental disease, kidney and liver disease as well as heart conditions can develop.

Our ‘senior’ clinics aim to detect any age related illnesses as early as possible to help us offer guidance and advice on the best way to care for your older pet, making their life happier and longer.

To help our clients save money the price of the consultation is reduced to £20. This includes a full examination by a veterinary surgeon, free urine test and blood pressure check. If in the course of the examination a blood sample is advised, this can also be offered at a significantly reduced fee.

PARK VETERINARY CLINIC, Leavesden

This comprises a comfortable waiting area and retail facility, with a consulting room and pharmacy. It has a much quieter ambience than the main surgery and many clients favour it for their consultations although no imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) or surgery is performed there – this is all referred to Cassiobury. Most of the vets from Cassiobury consult at the Clinic on a rota system. Consultations are by appointment only but we have varying times available throughout the day. Please telephone 01923 681261 to arrange a time convenient to you and your pet.

Nursing and advice services

Our nurses not only assist the vets in their clinical work but also serve the clients in many other ways. They will offer help and advice on your pets’ general healthcare and well-being and on more complicated matters such as obtaining a Pet Passport. Some examples:-

Nurse clinics

Nurses run appointments for nail-clipping, micro-chipping, renewing dressings, cleaning and dressing ears, administering medicines, and taking blood samples. These latter functions are carried out in conjunction with, and as follow-up to, full veterinary consultations.

Puppy Playgroup

Weight Watchers clinic

This is run by the nurses to monitor, supervise and advise regarding weight-reduction in clients’ pets following recommendations from the veterinary staff.

Puppy Playgroups

These are held at Katherine Place and are very successful and popular. They are all about socialisation for puppies under 14 weeks of age, which is essential for a happy and stress-free life, but also provide a forum for discussion on any topics that arise concerning puppy management and husbandry.

Pet Passports

Taking your pet on holiday has become popular and giving the necessary advice on setting up a pet passport and guiding the client and their pet through the procedure is available as one of our services.

Behaviour clinics

Carol McGuigan holds regular behaviour consultations with clients referred from within the Practice and from outside. She has a very high success rate in dealing with behaviour problems in both dogs and cats and also runs a successful desensitisation clinic for patients with phobias (particularly coming to the vets!)

If you would like further information on our Nurse Clinics or any of the above please contact the surgery on 01923 223321 or come in and see us at the Centre or the Clinic.

Out of Hours Emergency Procedures

We have now changed our out of hours provision to a specialist practice based in Hemel Hempstead, called Vets Now which is a 15 minute drive from Watford. (see map below).

Vets Now were set up several years ago to follow on a demand for more specialist care to clients and their pets. Their clinics are staffed at night by Veterinary surgeons and Veterinary Nurses who are employed by them and who have chosen to focus entirely on small animal emergency care (and they never work consecutive day and night shifts!) Their vets work nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Have a look at their website which explains their set up.

www.vets-now.com

So what happens once you have been seen at Vets Now with your animal?

If between you and the vet you decide the animal needs to stay in for immediate treatment, your animal would be admitted. Once your pet is stable and ok to be transported, you would bring your pet back to us for a recheck or further treatment/investigations on the next working day.

Can Vets Now access your pet’s history and clinical details?

Yes they can, our system (with help from our overnight ward staff) can email them the details if needed.

We also receive an email the next working day with treatment details of your pet and even attachments containing x-rays if any were taken.

Vets Now  will be providing our Out of Hours service  between the hours detailed below as from 11th December. The hours are slightly different at the moment but if you have an emergency initially please telephone us on 01923 223321 and listen to the recorded message.
